HARRIET RIDDELL & HUMPRHEY DETTMER: INSTITCHYOU: PEDAL POWER LONDON & BEINGS

27 June - 21 July 2017

Showcasing recent works by Harriet Riddell and Humphrey Dettmer.

Institchyou: Pedal Power London presents Harriet Riddell's pedal power stitched portraits and landscapes that the artist captured during her tour of London in Spring 2017. Using a bicycle to power her sewing machine, she encouraged engagement from her wide and diverse audiences scattered across London, to complete the collection. The use of stitching as a live performance art is truly unique, allowing her audience to reminisce with the familiarity of a traditional skill, while her technique shows how she has transitioned it to become a contemporary art form.

“I want to continue engagement by encouraging people to pedal and be a part of something bigger so that they feel some ownership of the art. The project should celebrate the city, its community and the individual.”  - Harriet Riddell, 2017

Humphrey Dettmer’s signature style harnesses his use of vibrant colours, bold strokes and high levels of contrast.

In his latest collection BeingsHumphrey highlights the relationship between man and nature, using harsh explosions of colour to signify the influence of man, while the natural beauty of animals is shown through stencil. The pairing of styles explores the influences man and nature have on each other.
